The Goddess Test by Aimee Carter

April 26th 2011, Harlequin Teen
297 pgs., E-galley
First in the Goddess Test series
Young Adult Fiction

From Goodreads:

Every girl who has taken the test has died.

Now it's Kate's turn.

It's always been just Kate and her mom--and now her mother is dying. Her last wish? To move back to her childhood home. So Kate's going to start at a new school with no friends, no other family and the fear her mother won't live past the fall.

Then she meets Henry. Dark. Tortured. And mesmerizing. He claims to be Hades, god of the Underworld--and if she accepts his bargain, he'll keep her mother alive while Kate tries to pass seven tests.

Kate is sure he's crazy--until she sees him bring a girl back from the dead. Now saving her mother seems crazily possible. If she succeeds, she'll become Henry's future bride, and a goddess.

If she fails..

Aimee Carter’s writing is superb and drew me into a world I was reluctant to leave. A world full of magic, Gods, and at the heart of it all family.

I’m not sure what I was expecting with this book, but this was not it. It was a million times better than I ever thought it would be.

The opening is sad, but in it I found humor. Mainly James and his ketchup we share this obsession.
Anything I found annoying was because I hate suspense. I didn’t guess the ending halfway in and for me that is surprising. It was not predictable.

Kate is a smart, courageous girl who would do anything for those she loves. No matter what they do to her. Heck, she’ll do anything for anyone. Stranger or not.

Henry, was constantly elusive. I still don’t have a good grasp on him, perhaps it’s due to the whole team thing YA seems to do. Team Henry or team James. This will annoy me greatly as she’s an adult and married. We’ll see.

I have so much more to say about this book, but it is all spoiler so I’ll leave that for another day.

Rating: 4.5/5

Great review. I hadn't wanted to read this book because of the hype, but I'm starting to reconsider. Great review!

  4. Hype sometimes is the best way to determine if a book is good or not. I hadn't really wanted to read this book until I read an interview with the author and she seemed so funny and personable.

  5. Wow--this one sounds really, really good--I can't believe I haven't heard of it before. And what a cover--I'll be looking for it. :)
